Julie’s Favourite Things
Performed at the funeral of Julie Steele, sung to the tune of "My Favourite Things"
Bright coloured dresses and
Gingerbread houses
Walks on the beach wearing
Light floral blouses
Time spent with friends on the green near the swings
Julie said these were her favourite things
Bright yellow wellies and
Wire-haired lurchers
Flowers and gardens and
Going to churches
WI and the friendship it brings
Julie said these were her favourite things
Eating a cake with a colourful topping
Love Island, Frasier and
Charity shopping
Four in a Bed and all things Japanese
Julie was always so easy to please
When we miss her
At the meetings
When we’re feeling sad
We laugh and remember her favourite things and then we don’t feel so bad
Colourful paintings and
House up in Redlands
Choc-o-late cake and
Great views from the headlands
Hats made of straw for the summers and springs
Julie said these were her favourite things
Shoe shops and yoghurt
And Galaxy chocolate
Dancing and TV and
Salad with rocket
Ice cream with dolly mix, pink party rings
Julie said these were her favourite things
Full of sunshine
Full of laughter
She was bonkers mad
We’ll never forget our incredible friend
And all the good times we had
.

Far from the city’s clamour
High on our misty Dorset hills,
Here we now live and grow as an Institute,
Rich in rural arts and skills,
You should see our knitting,
Dainty feather stitching
All the weird and wondrous things we make,
You can sample jams and chutneys,
Nibble Easter biscuits
And feast on Dorset Apple Cake,
But we value over other assets
Our boundless store of common sense,
And we feel, with all our varied facets
That our potentials are immense.
Faithful to our past we go
Forward to our future,
Friendly are our hearts
Our standards high
And if you are ever lonely you’ll always find a welcome

This poem has been reproduced in Jeremy Noble's book "A Russian Ending" with full permission of Broadwindsor WI.
A note has recently been unearthed from the archive which suggests the poem was written by a Mrs. May in the 1970's. We hope Mrs. May would be pleased to know that her poem is still being enjoyed 50 years on!
